Synopsis
In this dark fairytale full of myth and metaphor, a woman confronts her family’s past and reckons with her own intuition through a series of beautiful, unsettling, and dream-like interactions. Prompted by a mysterious visitor, she journeys from her home on top of a glacier and visions guide her toward her own oceanic origins.
A story of reckoning and empowerment, Selkolla brings the audience on a surreal journey of awakening to one’s power.
The Myth
Selkolla is a dreamlike journey based on the Selkie myth – an ancient story that echoes across cultures, especially in places where livelihoods were tied to the sea.
In the legend, a fisherman falls in love with a half-human, half-seal creature. Driven by loneliness, he hides her sealskin so she cannot return to the sea, bound to live the rest of her days with him on land.
An Icelandic Saga set in the remote Westfjords tells a darker twist on the legend about their lost child and a cursed town. Selkolla (Icelandic for "Seal-Woman") bridges both these folk-tales through merging timelines and thematic elements, as told through the journey of the Selkie's daughter -- the missing child.
